Toppenish is a city located in Yakima County, Washington. As of the 2000
census, the city had a total population of 8,946.
History
Toppenish was officially incorporated on April 29, 1907.
Geography
Toppenish is located at 46°22'44" North, 120°18'43" West (46.378880,
-120.311823).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of
4.9 km˛ (1.9 mi˛). 4.9 km˛ (1.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is
covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 8,946 people, 2,275 households, and
1,874 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,837.3/km˛
(4,762.7/mi˛). There are 2,440 housing units at an average density of 501.1/km˛
(1,299.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 31.48% White, 0.56% African
American, 7.90% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 55.95%
from other races, and 3.72% from two or more races. 75.72% of the population
are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,275 households out of which 52.1% have children under the age of
18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a
female householder with no husband present, and 17.6% are non-families.
14.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
3.88 and the average family size is 4.26.
In the city the population is spread out with 38.8% under the age of 18,
11.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 14.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who
are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100
females there are 106.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there
are 103.5 males.
