Wall is a town located in Pennington County, South Dakota. As of the 2000
census, the town had a total population of 818.
The town is most famous for Wall Drug Store, which opened as a small
pharmacy during the Depression but eventually developed into a large
roadside tourist attraction.
Geography
Wall is located at 43°59'30" North, 102°14'27" West (43.991559,
-102.240956).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of
5.3 km˛ (2.1 mi˛). 5.2 km˛ (2.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of
it is water. The total area is 1.94% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 818 people, 349 households, and 212
families residing in the town. The population density is 156.4/km˛
(404.2/mi˛). There are 438 housing units at an average density of 83.7/km˛
(216.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 91.44% White, 0.24% African
American, 6.11% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.49% Pacific Islander, 0.24%
from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population
are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 349 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of
18 living with them, 51.3% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a
female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% are non-families.
35.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.6% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
2.31 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18,
