Rapid City is a city located in Pennington County, South Dakota. As of the
2000 census, the city had a total population of 59,607. It is the county
seat of Pennington County.
Geography
Rapid City is located at 44°4'34" North, 103°13'42" West (44.076188,
-103.228299).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of
115.7 km˛ (44.7 mi˛). 115.5 km˛ (44.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1
mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 59,607 people, 23,969 households, and
15,220 families residing in the city. The population density is 516.1/km˛
(1,336.7/mi˛). There are 25,096 housing units at an average density of
217.3/km˛ (562.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 84.33% White, 0.97%
African American, 10.14% Native American, 1.00% Asian, 0.06% Pacific
Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 2.77% from two or more races. 2.77% of
the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 23,969 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age
of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 12.6%
have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% are non-families.
29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
2.39 and the average family size is 2.96.
In the city the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18,
11.8% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who
are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100
females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there
