Beaufort is a town located in Carteret County, North Carolina. As of the
2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,771. It is the county
seat of Carteret County.

Geography
Beaufort is located at 34°43'15" North, 76°39'9" West (34.720729,
-76.652569).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of
9.2 km˛ (3.5 mi˛). 7.1 km˛ (2.7 mi˛) of it is land and 2.1 km˛ (0.8 mi˛)
of it is water. The total area is 22.82% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 3,771 people, 1,780 households, and
1,048 families residing in the town. The population density is 531.4/km˛
(1,374.4/mi˛). There are 2,187 housing units at an average density of
308.2/km˛ (797.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 75.87% White,
19.99% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.05% Pacific
Islander, 2.39% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 3.77%
of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,780 households out of which 21.9% have children under the age
of 18 living with them, 40.3% are married couples living together, 15.3%
have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% are non-families.
35.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size
is 2.07 and the average family size is 2.65.
