Skaneateles is a village located in Onondaga County, New York. As of the
2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,616.
The Village of Skaneateles is in the Town of Skaneatles. It is at the
north end of Skaneateles Lake, a Finger Lake.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area
of 4.5 km˛ (1.7 mi˛). 3.7 km˛ (1.4 mi˛) of it is land and 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛)
of it is water. The total area is 16.28% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 2,616 people, 1,104 households, and
705 families residing in the village. The population density is 706.3/km˛
(1,826.8/mi˛). There are 1,190 housing units at an average density of
321.3 persons/km˛ (831.0 persons/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is
99.16% White, 0.08% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.31% Asian,
0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more
races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,104 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age
of 18 living with them, 53.9% are married couples living together, 7.8%
have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 36.1% are non-families.
33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.8% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size
is 2.35 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the village the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of
18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and
19.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For
