In the summer, the population of East Hampton is greatly increased by
wealthy vacationers, many from the New York metropolitan area. Housing
costs have greatly increased as East Hampton has evolved into a
fashionable, destination resort. In 2004, a modest house in East Hampton
Village could sell for over a million dollars. Many people employed in
East Hampton can no longer afford to live there, but instead commute from
Riverhead and other towns towards central Long Island.
Special Events
Each year, East Hampton Fire Department organizes fireworks on Main Beach
to celebrate July 4th. Sometimes fog off the water makes it hard to see
the fireworks. Vendors sell glow sticks. Right before the fireworks start,
there's a really long line to use the portable toilets.
Each summer is the annual Artists and Writers Softball Game http://www.artistsandwritersgame.com/index.html,
a charity benefit. Past players include John Irving, Norman Mailer, Kurt
Vonnegut, Dustin Hoffman, Bill Clinton, and singer Paul Simon.
