Chimayo is a town located in New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the town had
a total population of 2,924.
Geography
Chimayo is located at 36°0'12" North, 105°56'25" West (36.003247,
-105.940244).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of
14.1 km˛ (5.5 mi˛). None of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 2,924 people, 1,150 households, and 808
families residing in the town. The population density is 206.8/km˛ (535.9/mi˛).
There are 1,323 housing units at an average density of 93.6/km˛ (242.5/mi˛).
The racial makeup of the town is 48.60% White, 0.14% African American, 0.68%
Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 44.84% from other
races, and 5.68% from two or more races. 90.83% of the population are
Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,150 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of
18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 15.7% have a
female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% are non-families.
26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
2.54 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18,
