Chama is a village located in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. As of the 2000
census, the village had a total population of 1,199.
Geography
Chama is located at 36°53'41" North, 106°35'4" West (36.894777,
-106.584406).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area
of 6.6 km˛ (2.6 mi˛). 6.6 km˛ (2.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area
is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,199 people, 467 households, and 312
families residing in the village. The population density is 180.8/km˛
(467.9/mi˛). There are 601 housing units at an average density of 90.6/km˛
(234.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 67.56% White, 1.58% African
American, 2.67% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 25.10%
from other races, and 3.00% from two or more races. 71.23% of the population
are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 467 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of
18 living with them, 49.5% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a
female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families.
26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
2.57 and the average family size is 3.13.
In the village the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18,
6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who
are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100
females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there
