Cape May is a city located in Cape May County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,034. The Cape May area is a world-famous location for the observation of migrating birds in autumn, and is the site of the Cape May Bird Observatory.

In the summer, Cape May is a pleasant seaside resort which claims to be the oldest seaside resort in the United States. Cape May is noted for its large number of well-maintained Victorian houses; in the 1976 when it was officially designated one of only National Historic Landmark Cities in the nation. That designation is intended to ensure the architectural preservation of these buildings.

As of July 1, 2004 City of Cape May is governed under the Faulkner Act (Council-Manager).

Geography
Cape May is located at 38°56'13" North, 74°54'40" West (38.936814, -74.911094)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 km˛ (2.8 mi˛). 6.4 km˛ (2.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 11.43% water.

Cape May borders West Cape May Borough, Lower Township, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Delaware Bay.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 4,034 people, 1,821 households, and 1,034 families residing in the city. The population density is 628.0/km˛ (1,623.7/mi˛). There are 4,064 housing units at an average density of 632.7/km˛ (1,635.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 91.32% White, 5.26% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 3.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,821 households out of which 18.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% are non-families. 39.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.02 and the average family size is 2.69.

In the city the population is spread out with 16.3% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 19.8% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 28.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,462, and the median income for a family is $46,250. Males have a median income of $29,194 versus $25,842 for females. The per capita income for the city is $29,902. 9.1% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.0% are under the age of 18 and 10.9% are 65 or older.

Culture
Cape May has become known both for its Victorian gingerbread homes and its cultural offerings. The town hosts the Cape May Jazz Festival, the Cape May Music Festival and the Cape May NJ Film Festival. The scenic streets and homes have been painted by many artists including the late Alice Steer Wilson. The National Landmark town sits on the edge of the ocean and tourism, whether beach related or arts and history related, is the driving force behind the town's economy.
