Elko is a city located in Elko County, Nevada. As of the 2000 census, the
city had a total population of 16,708. It is the county seat of Elko County.
Geography
Elko is located at 40°50'11" North, 115°45'56" West (40.836396,
-115.765525)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of
37.5 km˛ (14.5 mi˛). 37.5 km˛ (14.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is
covered by water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 16,708 people, 6,200 households, and
4,216 families residing in the city. The population density is 445.2/km˛
(1,153.3/mi˛). There are 6,948 housing units at an average density of 185.1/km˛
(479.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 83.16% White, 0.37% African
American, 2.66% Native American, 1.12% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 9.63%
from other races, and 2.94% from two or more races. 21.12% of the population
are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,200 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of
18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a
female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families.
25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
2.66 and the average family size is 3.24.
In the city the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18,
9.8% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 7.6% who
are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100
females there are 104.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there
are 105.3 males.
