Freeport is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine. As of the 2000
census, the town had a total population of 7,800. Freeport is known for its
numerous outlet stores. It is also the location of L.L. Bean headquarters.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of
120.4 km˛ (46.5 mi˛). 89.9 km˛ (34.7 mi˛) of it is land and 30.5 km˛ (11.8
mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 25.34% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 7,800 people, 3,065 households, and
2,151 families residing in the town. The population density is 86.8/km˛
(224.8/mi˛). There are 3,276 housing units at an average density of 36.4
persons/km˛ (94.4 persons/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.22%
White, 0.42% African American, 0.31% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.04%
Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races.
0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,065 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of
18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a
woman whose husband does not live with her, and 29.8% are non-families.

living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
2.49 and the average family size is 2.93.
