Cortez is a city located in Montezuma County, Colorado. As of the 2000
census, the city had a total population of 7,977. It is the county seat of
Montezuma County.
Geography
Cortez is located at 37°20'57" North, 108°34'45" West (37.349270,
-108.579225)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of
14.3 km˛ (5.5 mi˛). 14.2 km˛ (5.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛)
of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.
The Mesa Verde National Park, featuring old
indian cliff dwellings, is situated southeast of Cortez.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 7,977 people, 3,209 households, and
2,079 families residing in the city. The population density is 560.0/km˛
(1,449.9/mi˛). There are 3,508 housing units at an average density of 246.3/km˛
(637.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 80.77% White, 0.26% African
American, 10.09% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 6.04%
from other races, and 2.44% from two or more races. 13.30% of the population
are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,209 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of
18 living with them, 48.1% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a
female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families.
30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone
living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is
2.41 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18,
8.8% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who
are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100
females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there
are 84.4 males.
