Lake Havasu City is a city located in Mohave County, Arizona. As of the 2000
census, the city had a total population of 41,938.
History
Lake Havasu City was established in 1963 by Robert P. McCulloch (of
McCulloch Chainsaws) as a planned community. It incorporated in 1978.
A popular tourist attraction in Lake Havasu City is London Bridge which
crosses over the Colorado River. It was purchased from the city of London
when the bridge was being replaced in 1968 for 2.5 million dollars. The
bridge was disassembled, the stones marked, shipped to Lake Havasu City, and
reassembled for another 7 million dollars. It opened again in October 1971.
It has been claimed that it was purchased in the mistaken belief that it was
the more grandiose Tower Bridge.
