Church of Panagia

The Church of Panagia Gorgoepikoos is located in the Plaka region of
Athens and was built over 700 years ago on the ruins of the temple of
Isis-Eileithyia. Much of the ruined ancient temple was used in the
creation of this beautiful church and the walls incorporate many marble
murals from these remains. This church is full of history and is close
to the Syntagma Station Metro station.

Kessariani Monastery is just a short drive from Athens city centre and
is situated on the slopes of Mount Ymittos. This famous monastery dates
back to the 11th century and was actually built on the remains of a
church from the 6th century. Highlights include the St. Anthony Chapel,
a 19th-century bell tower and some splendid religious works of art.

Metropolis Greek Orthodox Cathedral -

For Athens to become the capital city of Greece it was necessary to
build a impressive cathedral. Building commenced in 1834 and in 1863,
the Metropolis Greek Orthodox Cathedral was finally completed. The
cathedral soon became the most important church in the whole of Greece
and the interior is richly decorated with exquisite paintings and
detailed murals. This Athens cathedral is used for many official
occasions in Greece. There is a Sunday mass held every week early in the
morning and visitors are welcome. This Athens cathedral is close to the
Syntagma Metro station.

The Keramikos is Athens has been an ancient burial ground for over 3,000
years and was discovered in 1861, when the street that leads to Piraeus
was being built. Most of the graves that remain today are along the
Street of the Tombs and they consist of an interesting collection of
monuments, columns and detailed sculptures. The Oberlaender Museum is
nearby and houses many artefacts from the site, including a large
collection of terracotta figurines and vases.

The enormous Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens was built around 1,500
years ago for the worship of the Greek God Zeus and there was once a
large gold and ivory statue of Zeus inside. In the 4th century the
Temple of Olympian Zeus was destroyed by invaders and the impressive
ruins serve to remind visitors of the grandeur that was once present at
this site. Only some of the original 104 Corinthian columns remain. The
nearest Metro Stop is the Akropoli Station.

Athens' Acropolis tower high above the city and is one of the most
famous landmarks in Europe and the classical Greek architecture has
become a symbol of the city. Built around 2,500 years ago, the Acropolis
has several temples, of which the most important build is the Parthenon,
dedicated to Athena, a Greek goddess. The Parthenon is actually the
largest Doric temple ever completed in Greece. There is also a small
museum with an impressive display of ancient Greek sculptures. Now in
ruins, the Acropolis is still breathtaking and the large pieces of
marble remain as a reminder of its previous important life. The Akropoli
Station is the nearest Metro station.

Parliament Building - Syntagma Square, Athens

Built in 1840, Athens' Parliament Building is sited in Syntagma Square.
Originally a royal palace, this enormous building was badly damaged by
fire in the early 20th century and was rebuilt for the National Assembly.
One of the main highlights at the Parliament Building in Athens is the
hourly changing of the guard at the front of the building.
Hadrian's Arch - Amalias Avenue (off

Hadrian's Arch was originally the city gate and linked the Roman
quarters with original town of Athens. Constructed in marble, the tall
gate is close to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and features inscriptions
on each side. The Akropoli Station is the nearest Metro station.
Theatre of Dionysos - Plako, Athens, Greece

Situated in the city centre of Athens, the Theatre of Dionysos was
originally a timber structure that was constructed after the Festival of
Dionysia of Athens, sometime around 600 BC. The festival took place
during May and consisted of much fighting, dancing, singing and of
course, typical Greek feasting.
Situated on the south-eastern slope of the Acropolis, the vast
dimensions of the theatre remains. The Dionysos Theatre could seat
almost 20,000 spectators in 64 tiers, clearly showing its importance in
ancient Athens life.
Ramnous Archaeological Site - Kato Souli,

The ancient city of Ramnous has several important ruins, including two
large temples that were constructed in the 5th century. With views
across the Aegean Sea, some of the site is still undergoing excavations
as archaeologists continue searching for more historical remains. The
city of Ramnous is most easily accessible by car.
